MANILA, Philippines — Authorities seized 1.2 million tablets of Viagra and another tablet of Cialis on Saturday, authorities said.
The tablets, which are marketed as both an erectile dysfunction treatment and a medication for impotence in the Philippines, were confiscated by the United States Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and the Philippines government on Monday.
According to the drug manufacturer, Pfizer, the tablets were intended for sale under the brand name Cialis.
"The product was manufactured and sold by Pfizer to the Philippines, a country not a member of the United States Food & Drug Administration (FDA) as it is a drug in the same category as Cialis," a press release from Pfizer said.
The tablets are being manufactured in India.
Pfizer, whose share price is about 2.9% lower than the US market, also said it had seized the tablets after the United States FDA warned that they may contain hidden US prescription drugs.
"All prescription medicines sold in the United States, including Viagra and Cialis, are generally for sale through illegal channels," the company said.
It added that it was making further inquiries.
"We are taking action in order to stop any potentially harmful or dangerous counterfeit Viagra or Cialis," the company said.
Pfizer said it would not provide details about the drug's safety and efficacy, but said it would take the product to the United States to ensure its safety and quality.
The tablet was manufactured by Eli Lilly, which made the drug.
Eli Lilly, based in the Philippines, made the drug in the year 2009 and is the second-largest pharmaceutical company in the US, after Pfizer.
Pfizer said it would not disclose the drug's safety or efficacy until the FDA approved it on Tuesday.
In February, the FDA said it was conducting a review of Viagra, Cialis, and other related prescription medicines, but did not recommend the sale or supply of the product. It said it would only provide details when the FDA advised consumers to check with their doctor or pharmacist.
In June, the FDA said it was investigating a suspected sexual dysfunction in a man who was taking the erectile dysfunction medication Viagra, which is used to treat erectile dysfunction.
Pfizer said it had seized the tablets, but did not provide more details.

The company also said that it had received "more than 700" reports of counterfeit drugs in the country, including "about 10 million pills of counterfeit Viagra and Cialis".
The company said it is working with authorities to identify any potential sources of the counterfeit or substandard drugs, which are promoted by pharmaceutical companies.
"We do not have enough information to identify any potential sources of our products or their contents," the company said.
Pfizer said it had received reports of counterfeit drugs, including the tablets, "which have not been identified to be genuine."
The company said it would take the product to the US FDA if it found any.
